Alison reappeared with some drinks as the same nurse from earlier stopped by for Danniella’s hourly checks.

‘Same as before,’ Kirsty said, releasing the blood pressure cuff. ‘And you ate some lunch?’

Danniella nodded.

‘In that case, you’re good to go.’

‘Really?’

Kirsty leaned in conspiratorially. ‘You might want to put some clothes on first, though. Just sayin’.’

‘That’s brilliant news,’ Alison said.

Kirsty turned to Alison. ‘Your friend here is going to need lots of support.’ She turned back to Danniella. ‘What must you do first thing tomorrow?’

‘Register with a doctor.’

‘And after that?’

‘Take all the help I can get. Thanks, Kirsty.’

‘Pleasure. And let’s not be seeing you again.’ With a smile, Kirsty left them.

‘Any chance of a lift home?’ Danniella asked.

‘Of course.’

‘And… and I realise this is a huge imposition so feel free to say no, but I was wondering…’

Alison gently placed her hand on Danniella’s arm. ‘I can stay for as long as you need.’

Danniella felt quite shaky with relief. The thought of going back there on her own, with blood still on the sink, the detritus from several binges in the kitchen, and goodness knows what other mess was too much to cope with. ‘Thank you,’ she whispered.

‘You’re the one doing me the favour. That bed is ten times more comfortable than the one at home. In fact, everything about your flat is ten times more comfortable than my house. How about you get some clothes on then we can get out of here?’
